ABOUT US

The Plinth Store offers high-quality, museum-grade plinths and display pedestals for artists, photographers, retailers, art collectors and events.

Our online store is supported by our pop-up showroom in Smith Street, Fitzroy which is open by appointment.

CRAFTED

A poor plinth creates visual noise. When setting up his gallery in Fitzroy, Rory Daniel couldn’t find commercial art supports that met museum standards; the visible seams he found compromised the artwork. To solve this, he designed and built his own plinths with seamless, near-invisible edges.

Recognizing that others faced the same frustration, Rory opened his workshop to the wider creative community. The Plinth Store now builds custom supports for prominent galleries, discerning collectors, commercial studios, and retail environments.

Handcrafted in the studio directly above the Smith + Gertrude contemporary art gallery in Smith Street, each piece undergoes a personal, quality controlled process involving double-sanding and triple-painting for premium results. This is an informed collaboration between the builder who understands your creative needs, and a client who values their objects.

SIZES

We keep eleven standard plinth sizes in a white finish in stock. These are usually available for immediate pick-up.

MUSEUM-GRADE

The 45 degree mitred joints give your plinths extra strength as well as a cleaner exterior - the fancy joints hide the any joint marks in the corner, making them almost invisible. This is much better than traditional plinths made with right angle joints which expose the unsightly sides of one of the boards in the join.

INVISIBLE JOINS

You’ll find flat surfaces on each side of your plinth - no nail holes, pins, screws or uneven surfaces.
Your plinths are finished with a quality flat paint that doesn’t detract from your artwork as they sit atop them.

WASH-FRIENDLY PAINT

We use Dulux wash and wear paint. This paint is freely available, so when it comes time to touching-up your plinth, you'll know that you can get matching paint easily and quickly.

READY-MADE

No, not that ready-made - sadly Marcel Duchamp does not work here!
The Plinth Store plinths come fully constructed. Unlike the flat-pack plinths available online with their unsightly joins, tacky surfaces and low load-bearing construction, ours doesn't come with a set of allen keys.
